As more students and employees return to campus, it is a good time to revisit what to do if you see suspicious behavior within university buildings.

Access to university buildings and facilities is generally restricted to faculty, staff, students, university affiliates, and invited guests. If you believe someone is in violation of that policy, call 911 and UTPD will respond to verify if they have legitimate business on campus. If the individual does not, the officer will take appropriate law enforcement action which may include the issuance of a Criminal Trespass Warning and escorting them off campus. If the person returns, they will then be subject to arrest. An officer will inform them of that consequence upon issuing a warning.

When an ID card is required for entry, do not let unknown persons follow in behind you. This is for your safety and the safety of others.

  • As a university employee and representative of the university, you can ask a violator to leave the premises. If the person does not comply, you can state that you will call the university’s police department.
  • As a student, it is recommended that you call 911 or text and send photos to UTPD 911 dispatch via the LiveSafe at UT Austin app anytime you feel unsafe.
  • Review Building Access and Security FAQs.

UTPD appreciates your assistance and your keen knowledge of when something is off. Our students and employees know their areas best—they walk the same path and pass through the same buildings and parking garages daily. Let’s work together to make everyone’s experience here at the university a pleasant one.
